2008 MINI Cooper

Overview

The current MINI Cooper was redesigned for the 2007 model year. For 2008 it is offered only as a hatchback. The MINI's compact size, cute styling and good fuel economy make it the trendy choice for young urban motorists. Produced by BMW, the front-wheel-drive MINI Cooper is a small, two-door, four-passenger car, offered in both coupe and convertible versions; the coupe received a total makeover in 2007 and was updated with more power, a more muscular look and new features. Available in Cooper and Cooper S, the Cooper S has a sportier suspension set-up.

Power and Performance

The MINI Cooper's powertrain was updated to a more state-of-the-art condition in compliance with new regulations. Under the hood of the Cooper is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder that delivers 118 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque teamed with a standard six-speed manual and an optional six-speed automatic. Mileage estimates are 28 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway with the MT; and 26/34 mpg (city/highway) with the AT. The short wheelbase and wheels at the far corners of the body allow for excellent handling and precise steering.

Body and Styling

The MINI Cooper received a total makeover in 2007. A new ignition button replaces the conventional key-start; new ambient illumination and a larger center speedometer include a new range of functions. The exterior features chrome accents, a new hexagon radiator grille, and new indicator lights which are fully integrated into the headlights. The front overhang and nose were reshaped to be more pedestrian-friendly in the event of a collision. The MINI is built to provide a lot of interior space; it also has cargo space of up to 5.7 cubic feet with the rear seat up.

Safety Features

Standard safety features include four wheel anti-lock brakes, de-powered air bag, passenger air bag, head air bag, side air bag and traction control. Stability control is optional. The IIHS rated the MINI Cooper as”Good” in crash offset tests.
